REGIONAL DIRECTOR, EXTENDICARE ASSIST – Corporate Head Office

Management and Consulting Services

Candidates are invited to apply for the full-time position of Regional Director, Extendicare Assist, Management and Consulting Services Division. Reporting to the Director of Operations, Extendicare Assist, the Regional Director is responsible for overseeing all phases of the operations of the homes in their assigned portfolio (Long Term Care & Retirement Homes). This includes maintaining and ensuring standards of care, budgets, developing business plans, providing input into the development of the home’s strategy and vision, and managing staff performance in accordance with established policies and procedures. The Regional Director also supports the division’s Business Development strategy in their role of acquiring new business by maintaining our client base, thereby building Extendicare’s reputation and enhancing our ability to acquire new clients.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Works closely with and makes recommendations to executive leadership and owners from Extendicare’s business partner group across the spectrum of operational areas (see below)
  • Builds relationships and advocates on behalf of the company and/or partners within and outside our sector with key stakeholder organizations including employer associations, government bodies, and suppliers
  • Participates in the establishment and follow through of the financial (budget) goals for each home in the portfolio.
  • Reviewing capital and operating budget proposals from each home taking into consideration partner requirements, the recommendations of consultants and other staff specialists and making recommendations to the Senior Director.
  • Reviewing and approving requests for changes in budgets for each home in consultation with the Director of Operations
  • Following up regularly to ensure the established financial goals are achieved
  • In conjunction with the Administrators and Executive Directors, develops goals and objectives that reflect both partner and Extendicare standards
  • Approves the annual operating and program goals and objectives established by each home and reviews progress towards achievement
  • Reviews proposed changes and assists in the development of corporate policies and procedures
  • Ensures all nursing homes/Retirement Homes in the designated portfolio comply with Extendicare and government policies
  • Monitors and provides support in areas such as labour relations, occupational health and safety, and quality management
  • Provides support for business development activities associated with acquiring new or increased managed home and consulting business. May include “lead” generation, conducting initial meetings, overseeing competitive bids/processes (RFI, RFQ, RFP), contract negotiation, and deal closure for a variety of business opportunities.
  • Provides leadership and coordinates the implementation and orientation of new contracts into Extendicare Assist.
  • Participates in and provides input towards human resource management by:
  • Conducting recruitment, selection, and orientation of Administrators/Executive Directors
  • Participating in performance management of facility Administrators/Executive Director (including setting expectations, evaluating performance and development planning)
  • Providing regional input for the development of human resource strategies

What you bring:

  • Post-secondary degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration or related field. Masters prepared would be a definite asset.
  • Minimum of five years progressive management experience in long-term care or health care sector/Retirement Home Experience necessary.
  • Ability to travel extensively throughout the province
  • Must be able to build strong relationships with key stakeholders (persons, boards and organizations) to advocate on behalf of the company.
  • Must have an interest in self-development, continuing education and life long learning
  • Ability to work effectively with others while translating plans, concepts and intentions into actions that will achieve results
  • Ability to proactively share information as well as present information clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing; an active listener, digging deeper to test assumptions, to ensure understanding and to obtain accurate information, interprets, and understands the point of view of others

  • Ability to collect and use information to thoroughly think through problems and situations; puts information from various sources together to see the ‘big picture” and generates creative solutions
  • Ability to prioritize and focus action on what is best for the organization through an understanding of the key business issues
  • Customer-focused attitude, with the ability to understand, anticipate and identify customer needs while using information to provide the best individualized service
  • Proven integrity through open and honest interactions with colleagues and encourages active participation and commitment from others in the pursuit of common goals; understand roles, set expectations, share information, and build consensus
  • Proven experience in taking personal responsibility for seeking information from various sources including Human Rights, Employment and Labour Relations legislation; enables others’ learning through sharing experiences, coaching and mentoring
  • Superb organization, planning, time management and multi-tasking skills
